After the huge success of last year’s Thrasher event, it returns for WHP2010 with an even bigger and more varied line up, including some of the most innovative producers and musicians from around the world. Fresh from completing his hightly acclaimed Cosmogramma LP,  Los Angeles’ Flying Lotus will be performing live, as will dubstep supergroup Magnetic Man, headlining with their groundbreaking live show and visuals. Bridging both ends of the genre’s history, dubstep founding fathers Digital Mystikz Mala and Coki are joined by the young star of the scene from Bristol, Joker. Holland’s Martyn will be showcasing the kind of innovative DJ set that made his Fabric 50 mix such a success, his crossover blend of techno, house, broken beat and dubstep turning heads the world over. As with last year’s event, Manchester’s Hoya Hoya will be hosting the back room, showcasing some of the best young producers in the world, such as Vienna’s Dorian Concept, London’s Ikonika, Floating Points and WHP resident Joy Orbison. One of the most open minded and forward thinking nights in the city, founders and main residents Illum:sphere and Jonny Dub have bought acts such as Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, The Gaslamp Killer (who named it his favourite club outside of the US), Daedelus, Dam Funk, and Brackles in to play, as well as regular appearances from their own highly respected group of residents Jon K, Éclair Fifi and the hotly tipped Krystal Klear

• Magnetic Man [ Live ]

  • Formed in 2007, Magnetic Man is a collaborative project between dubstep legends Skream and Benga and their longtime friend and fellow producer Artwork. Using three synchronised computers running Ableton live software, their live show is a unique and ever changing experience, with each member contributing and improvising different parts to song structures. They often rework their own solo material live, and are sometimes accompanied by visuals created by the Novak Collective. Their debut release last year, The Cyberman EP, was a smash hit on the dubstep scene, and got heavy rotation from the likes of Caspa, N-Type, Chase and Status and many other leaders of the scene.  They toured for the first time this year, including a string of huge festival appearances at festivals such as Benicassim and Glastonbury, as well as appearing on the front cover of the NME, a rare feat for a dubstep act.
     
• Flying Lotus

  • Los Angeles resident Steven Ellison, more commonly known as Flying Lotus, has established himself as one of the finest beat makers of his generation. Drawing from a huge list of influences as wide as freestyle jazz, hip hop, experimental electronica and contemporary classical music, his astonishing productions have won him acclaim across the world as one of the most original and exciting artists working in electronic music today. The nephew of late Jazz greats Alice and John Coltrane, he comes from a family of musicians, and was introduced to avant garde and experimental music early on in his life. His debut album 1983 was released in 2006, but it was not until he signed with Warp a year later that he started to receive such intense media attention, his Reset EP marking him out as one of the top talents on a label with an already impressive roster. His Cosmogramma album released this year, featuring collaborations with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Ravi Coltrane and Dorian Concept amongst others,  received almost universally glowing reviews, and is expected to appear in many critics’ best of 2010 lists.
     
• Joker

  • Bristol wonderkid Joker is one of the most original and talented artists in dubstep today. Originally a hit on the grime scene, his early productions such as Gully Brook Lane and Stuck in the System were complex symphonies of synth lines and drum patterns, far more musically diverse and adv anced than his peers. Drawing on influences such as G-funk, synth pop and even vintage electro funk, his style manages to remain melodic and accessible as well as being aimed firmly at the dance floor. Massively successful remixes for the likes of Simian Mobile Disco and Little Boots were followed up with solo releases such as Purple City, Psychedelic Runway and the unstoppable Tron, quickly establishing him as one of the leading names in dubstep today. He is currently working on his debut album as well as many more high profile remixes and releases. 
     
• Martyn

  • Born in Eindhoven, Martijn Deykers aka Martyn became an acolyte of the early 90s rave scene, collecting records by the likes of Derrick May and Carl Craig. Later on in the decade however, he turned his allegiance to the nascent jungle scene. Launching the hugely successful drum and bass club Red Zone, he started making his own music almost a decade later, his early drum and bass productions quickly morphing into a newer and more original sound. A soulful blend of early house, proto jungle, dubstep and minimal techno, drawing comparisons to acts such as Burial, Shackleton, Ramadanman and his fellow Dutchman 2562, his productions are hard to define, using house and techno as a starting point but veering away from the restrictions of 4/4, their only constants being their originality and quality . His releases on his own label 3024 such as the ethereal Vancouver and Twenty Four, as well as his stunning Fabric 50 mix, ensured he became one of the most highly respected names in contemporary electronic dance today. He has collaborated with and remixed the likes of Flying Lotus, Scuba, Fever Ray and many others.
     
• Digital Mystikz: Mala & Coki

  • Considered two of the founding fathers of dubstep, Mala and Coki aka Digital Mystikz are revered amongst the scene as legends, both for their releases and their musical philosophy. Along with Loefah and Sgt Pokes they run the acclaimed label DMZ along with its club night of the same name. Childhood friends from Norwood in South London, they began to make music together as teenagers, releasing their first vinyl in 2004. The label and club night steadily grew in reputation, with Radio 1’s John Peel and the Aphex Twin known as fans, and Radio 1’s longtime supporter of the scene Mary Ann Hobbs famously first came across dubstep when a friend bought her to the night in Brixton. Their pioneering spacious, intense and minimal productions such as Haunted and Anti-War dub were hugely influential in the development of dubstep’s sound, and their releases often sell out of their limited edition runs almost immediately. They recently released their first triple vinyl album on DMZ, the highly anticipated Return II Space, as well as continuing their acclaimed own solo careers. 
     
• Joy Orbsion

  • Few artists have become so talked about as quickly as 23 year old Peter O’Grady did in the aftermath of his debut release under his guise Joy Orbison, the unstoppable Hyph Mngo. Topping many best single of 2009 lists, the track and its b-side Wet Look both pulled off the near impossible trick of referencing house, UK garage, dubstep and even jungle whilst concurrently sounding completely fresh, original and unlike anything else around at the time. Since then the hybrid sound he helped pioneer has blossomed, with many new producers using the myriad influences of Hyph Mngo as a touchstone. O’Grady credits his uncle, drum and bass legend Ray Keith, with introducing him to jungle and UK garage at a young age. Recently named by both the NME and the Guardian as someone to watch in 2010, he launched his own record label, Doldrums, this year.
     
• Floating Points [ Live ]

  • 23 year old Londoner Sam Shepherd’s track Vacuum Boogie released last year on Alexander Nut’s Eglo imprint caused a huge commotion on the house and techno scenes, a warm and spaced out mix of live disco percussion, vintage house chords and loose arrangement that astounded many when they found out it was the work of someone so young and inexperienced. Trained in both classical composition and jazz piano, the highly ambitious Shepherd finds time to produce music in between studying for a Ph.D. in Pharmacology. Last year he performed at London’s Roundhouse with a thirteen piece Floating Points Ensemble, with who he is working on new material with. He has remixed the likes of Four Tet, Basement Jaxx and Sebastien Tellier and Djed across Europe, the US and Canada over the past few months alone.
     
• Dorian Concept

  • Austria’s Oliver Thomas Johnson, more commonly known as Dorian Concept, is one of the brightest young stars of electronic music, his startlingly complex and energetic productions best demonstrated on debut album When Planets Explode, released last year. Often compared to his contemporaries such as Harmonic 313, Flying Lotus, and Hudson Mohawke, his tracks are skewed masterpieces of synth laden hip hop beats and glitchy electronic experimentation, always held together by a sense of playfulness and sonic wit. Supported by such free thinking DJs as Martyn, Benji B and Giles Peterson, he is an alumni of the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy . He recently released a 7” single containing remixes of Jamie Lidell and Houston’s Three Six Mafia.
     
• Ikonika [ Live ]

  • With her debut single Please released under her moniker Ikonika, it was clear that Sara Abdel-Hamid was a special talent; mixing discordant and haunting off-key melodies with spatial drum patterns and sub bass.  Based in London and an alumni of the Red Bull Music Academy, she is one of the only artists to have released a full length album on revered and groundbreaking label Hyperdub, alongside label boss Kode 9 and Burial. Her tracks and remixes on esteemed labels such as Planet Mu, Bpitch Control and Warp have seen her become one of the foremost and exciting names in electronic music in England today. Flying Lotus has declared himself a huge fan of her work, and her recent 12” releases on Hyperdub, the Edits EP and single Idiot, found their way into the boxes of DJs such as James Blake, Falty DL, Mary Ann Hobbs and Hudson Mohawke. She toured the states last year, and this year alone has travelled as far afield as Singapore, Germany, Norway and Italy.
     
• Illum:Sphere

  • Hoya Hoya founder Ryan Hunn aka Illum:Sphere has quickly become known as one of the most original and talented producers to emerge from Manchester in recent years. Counting such high profile names as Thom Yorke, Mary Ann Hobbs, Modeselektor and Martyn amongst his fans, the latter hand picking him to remix his track Brilliant Orange and release music on his 3024 label. Making a name for himself with his Incoming and Long Live The Plan EPs on Fat City last year, his sound is a dense and complex combination of  hypnotic synthesizers, layered samples and drum patterns veering way outside of the rigid structures of  4/4. Recently debuting his live show with stunning visuals by fellow Hoya resident EMN, he has played alongside the likes of Rustie, The Gaslamp Killer, Daedelus, Kode 9, HudMo and many other luminaries of the scene, as well as being invited to take part in Red Bull’s prestigious Music Academy last year.  
     
• Jonny Dub

  • Jonny Dub is one of the founding members and resident of the highly respected Hoya Hoya night, previously running the Sketch City night, a meeting place for artists, illustrators and musicians in Manchester. Known as one of the most eclectic and passionate Djsin the city, he appears all over Manchester playing highly varied sets of hip hop, garage, dubstep, reggae and more at nights such as Hit and Run.
     
• Krystal Klear

  • Hoya Hoya resident Krystal Klear has managed to gain such high profile fans as Mary Ann Hobbs and Hudson Mohawke without even releasing a record yet, his productions an addictive mix of electro funk, boogie and modern soul, injecting a modern twist into old sounds. 
     
• Éclair Fi Fi
  •  
  • Hoya Hoya resident Éclair Fi Fi  is also one of the main DJs of Glasgow’s renowned LuckyMe collective, recently headlining the collective’s event at Sonar festival in Barcelona. Originally from Edinburch, she has an encyclopedic knowledge of italo, electro, hip hop and club music in general, and has forged a reputation as one of the most exciting and uncompromising DJs around.
     
• Jon K
  •  
  • Jon K is also a resident at Hoya Hoya, having previously been resident at the legendary Friends and Family and Eyes Down nights in Manchester, as well as working at Fat City records. He has played with such high profile artists as Madlib, Moodymann and Jazzanova to name but a handful.
