Simian Mobile Disco bring their brand new club night project Delicitassen to WHP2010, with a line up they’ve curated especially for the occasion. Delicatessen is the precursor to the launch of their new label Delicacies, which they have launched as a platform for their new material. The night is a celebration of the best in disco, house and techno, with some of the best live acts appearing alongside some of the top DJs in Europe.

Joining them onstage are New York’s disco heroes Hercules and Love Affair, bringing their joyous riot of classic house and boogie to WHP, as will fellow New Yorkers Holy Ghost. Legendary rebels and music obsessives Andrew Weatherall and Ivan Smagghe will be performing a very rare back to back set which promises to be truly special, and Belgian remixers extraodinaire Aeroplane will be flying in for one of their eclectic sets. Hamburg’s Tensnake, riding high on the success of his unstoppable anthem Coma Cat, is joined by king of the re-edit Mark E.

  • Simian Mobile Disco, a duo comprised of James Ford and James Shaw, formed in 2005 while both were in the band Simian. Initially a DJ duo and side project for their more dance orientated productions, their early releases on cult French label Kitsuné and remixes for the likes of Klaxons, Muse and Air started to gain them recognition, but it was their 2006 single Hustler that established them as some of the top producers on the scene, a catchy blend of electro synths, techy drums and an offbeat vocal about shoplifting. Their debut album Attack Decay Sustain Release on Wichita, the title a nod to their fondness for vintage analogue synthesizers, was one of the dance albums of the year. A mix for Bugged Out! followed, showcasing their love of classic house and blistering techno, and their follow up album Temporary Pleasures was released last year to huge acclaim. Featuring guests such as Beth Ditto, Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, and Super Furry Animal’s Gruff Rhys, it was a mix of glacial electro pop, techno and vintage acid reimagined in a modern setting. They have become widely known for their stunning live shows, using intense lighting displays and a huge rig of giant analogue synth modules and drum machines, tweaking and reworking tracks on the fly.
     
• Hercules & Love Affair [ Live ]

  • New York DJ Andy Butler began his career at the precocious age of 15 in a gay club in Denver. Later moving to New York Forming Hercules and Love Affair as his tribute to the golden ages of disco and early house. First single Blind was recorded with the renowned vocalist Antony Hegarty from Antony and the Jonsons, a joyous disco track fuelled with live percussion and bass, winning the best song award of 2008 by Pitchfork. Recording with a full live band and vocalist Nomi Ruiz, their debut self-titled album was released on James Murphy’s seminal New York label DFA. It was widely praised for its elegant production, and modern reworking of old dance sounds exemplified on further singles such as Classique #2 and You Belong. His Sidetracked mix CD for Renaissance last year showcased his wide record collection and deep knowledge of electro funk, disco and old acid house. The second Hercules and Love Affair is set for release later this year, following highly acclaimed tours across the US and Europe.    
     
• Andrew Weatherall vs Ivan Smagghe

  • Two of the mavericks of dance music both with long and illustrious careers dotted with myths and rumours, Andrew Weatherall and Ivan Smagghe will be performing a very special back to back set.

    Andrew Weatherall began his long and varied career working with Paul Oakenfold on a remix of the Happy Mondays’ Hallelujah. More remix work followed, as did the creation of the Boy’s Own fanzine with Terry Farley and Pete Heller, a fanzine dedicated to music and football. Boy’s Own branched out into infamous parties and a label, and in 1993 he formed the influential Sabres of Paradise duo. Three years later he joined forces with Keith Tenniswood to form Two Lone Swordsmen, signing to Warp and creating a jointly run label, Rotters Golf Club. As well as various albums under Two Lone Swordsmen, he has released his own solo material, produced for the likes of Primal Scream, remixed Björk, New Order, St Etienne and many others. Despite this glittering career however, he is perhaps best known, however, as one of the truly original and uncompromising DJs of his generation, his astounding knowledge of music knowing almost no bounds. Equally at home playing a set of 1950’s rockabilly or the latest techno releases, his sets have seen him travel the world over playing to devoted audiences.

    Ivan Smagghe first came to prominence as one half of the dark Parisian electro disco duo Black Strobe with Arnaud Rebotini. Working together for over eight years they were influential to the electro scene at the turn of the millennium, before Smagghe left in 2006 to pursue new projects. Developing his wide taste in dance music whilst working in Rough Trade’s record shop in Paris and running a show on Radio Nova, he has become known as one of the most interesting and uncompromising DJs around, his sets always a compromise between the best of new and old releases, whether rare obscurities of tried and tested classics. Comprising of anything from warped techno to avant garde disco and obscure electro pop, he has released many mix CDs such as Fabric 23, Suck My Deck for Bugged Out! and the seminal How To Kill The DJ for Joakim’s Tigersushi. He runs his own highly respected Kill The DJ label and club night, and he regularly tours the world playing at clubs such as Berlin’s Robert Johnson, Glasgow’s recently deceased Optimo and London’s Fabric.

     
• Aeroplane

  • The Belgian duo of Stephen Fasano and Vito De Luca released their first single Caremellas on The Glimmers’ label Eskimo back in 2007. A lush, downtempo affair with expansive chords and a lolling bass line, it caught the attention of many as a breath of fresh air amongst more abrasive sounds often found in dance music. It was for their remixes, however, that they shot to fame, reworking the likes of Sebastien Tellier, Breakbot, MGMT, and Au Revoir Simon. Their radical reworking of Friendly Fires’ indie anthem Paris into a stylish, Balearic disco-tinged track raised the level of hype surrounding them to almost hyperbolic levels, seeing them become some of the most in demand producers in electro and disco today. They are also known for their DJ sets and mix CDs for the likes of Mixmag, eclectic selections of electro funk, disco both new and old, obscure pop songs and upfront electro. They recently released a single We Can’t Fly, and their highly anticipated debut album is expected imminently.
     
• Tensnake

  • Tensnake’s Coma Cat has been inescapable this year, a melodic disco gem that has been played by electro, house and techno DJs alike. The alias of Hamburg resident Marco Niemerski, he has completed remixes for Foals, Goldfrapp and Junior Boys amongst others, as well as releasing  EPs for Players Paradise and his own Mirau records, as well as a podcast for Resident Advisor. He will be the first artist released on Tim Sweeney’s highly anticipated Beats in Space label launched later this year, as well as releasing his debut album next year.
     
• Joakim

  • France’s joakim Bouaziz has had a wide and varied career, from running cult label Tigersushi, band leader of the Ectoplasm and Joakim and The Disco, prolific remixer and globe trotting DJ. First coming to people’s attention with his eccentric EPs Are You Vegetarian? and Come Into My Kitchen, bizarre but arresting mixtures of off kilter disco, wonky electro, punk funk and his own downbeat vocals. Debut album Fantomes and further singles on labels such as Kitsuné further raised his status, and he became one of the most in demand remixers around, radically reworking the likes of Friendly Fires, Metronomy, Tiga, Simian Mobile Disco, DJ Mehdi and others with imaginative and surprising results. His website and label Tigersushi has released records by the likes of Mu, Poni Hoax, K.I.M. and Panico, as well as re-releasing obscure classics by the likes of Soft Cell, Ministry and ESG. He has recorded a further two albums and plays live and DJs as far afield as Tokyo, New York, Berlin and Sydney.

     
• Naïve Melody

  • Started by four music obsessed friends in Manchester, Naive Melody, taking their name from a Talking Heads song, set out with the aim of establishing a night in Manchester to rival clubs like Optimo; bringing the best musical talent in the world to a club with a fantastic atmosphere and regular, diverse and appreciative crowd of music lovers. Choosing the surreal chinese karaoke bar Charlies as their venue, few could argue they have succeeded, with legendary names such as Carl Craig, Ivan Smagghe, Kiki, I-F and their idols Optimo amongst many others coming to the tiny venue. They have rightfully gained a reputation as one of the best small clubs in the city, and their DJs regularyl appear at venues such as Sankeys, the Warehouse Project, festivals all over the country and events as far afield as Ibiza.

     
• Mark E

  • Born and raised in Wolverhampton, Mark E moved to Birmingham as a student. Introduced to the world of dance music by his older brother, he embraced the scene Djing around the city’s clubs and bars. In 2005 he re-edited Womack and Womack’s Baby I’m Scared Of You to use in his sets, but his epic groove based reworking of the track found favour with Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson, who played it regularly on his show. Since then he has forged a name for himself as one of the best re-editors of old songs around, reworking artists such as Janet Jackson, Diana Ross and Grace Jones, his edits all subtly pushing the tracks more towards the dance floor whilst always paying respect to the original music. He has taken his DJ sets of house, disco, funk and soul across Europe, and has released music on labels such as Jiscomusic, Merc and Endless Flight.

  • WHP resident Greg has also previously held residencies at Sankeys and the former Paradise Factory, and over the last decade has played alongside artists as diverse as Dave Clarke, Francois K, Jeff Mills, Basement Jaxx, Carl Craig, Giles Peterson, Steve Lawler and Jamie Jones amongst many others . His residencies have enabled him to master a wide range of styles, ranging from soulful and jazzy deep house all the way to uncompromising techno. Recently Greg has played high profile gigs outside of Manchester at the likes of London’s Matter and a set at V Festival.
