For what promises to be a truly special event, one of Manchester’s favourite sons will be performing live at WHP2010. Anybody who witnessed The Stone Roses at Spike Island in 1990 or the massive sellout successes of their former frontmans recent M.E.N. Arena gigs and outdoor homecoming show at Manchester’s Platt Fields Park earlier this summer will know that Ian Brown is a truly outstanding performer. This winter, he brings his unmissable live show to the more intimate surroundings of Store Street, for one of his smallest gigs in a long time. Able to draw from his illustrious body of work, from his solo tracks such as Love Like A Fountain and F.E.A.R. to his timeless songs from The Stone Roses repertoire, his recent setlists have featured I Wanna Be Adored and Fools Good. Owner of the NME "Godlike Genius" and  Q magazine "Legend" award, as well as both the Observer and the NME naming The Stone Roses debut album the greatest British album of all time, it is difficult to overstate his standing in the city as a musical hero.

  • Born in Warrington but adopted as a Mancunian hero, Ian Brown has long been a central figure in the city’s proud cultural heritage. Since forming The Stone Roses alongside guitarist John Squire, bassist Mani and drummer Reni at the ecstasy infused height of the so-called second summer of love in the late 80s, his legend has grown from strength to strength. Together, the quartet released two long-players, The Stone Roses in 1989, widely regarded as one of the best British albums of all time, and follow up The Second Coming, before splitting in acrimonious circumstances. Over the years he has resisted endless demands to reunite his former band, carving out an illustrious and varied solo career instead, looking as much to the future as the past. He has had numerous hit singles taken from his six acclaimed studio albums, such as F.E.A.R, Corpses In Their Mouths and Golden Gaze amongst others, and has been a huge influence on the likes of Oasis, The Verve, Kasabian, the Arctic Monkeys and many other northern bands that followed in his hallowed footsteps. He has collaborated with the likes of Noel Gallagher, Sinead O’Connor and UNKLE, his much lauded work with the latter including the singles Reign and Be There. He is rumoured to be collaborating with The Smiths’ Johnny Marr, as well as working on a follow up to last year’s successful My Way album.

  • Born in Accrington, Mancunian legend Mike Pickering became a fan of Northern Soul in his youth, and at the age of 16 met fellow music obsessive Rob Gretton, the pair both going on to work for Factory records later in life. Pickering got a job as one of the resident DJs at the Hacienda during its halcyon period in the 80s, often playing with his DJ partner Graeme Park, and was hugely influential in its musical policy and style after visiting New York’s famous Paradise Garage to play with Larry Levan and becoming inspired by the venue. He signed the Happy Mondays, James and other acts to Factory records in the 80s, his knack for spotting musical talent later earning him a job as head A&R for Sony BMG where he now works with acts such as Calvin Harris, The Ting Tings, The Gossip, Kasabian and many others. In the eighties he formed the experimental punk-funk group Quando Quango, but achieved much wider recognition with his later band M-People, who had huge chart success in the UK and the US throughout the 90s.

  • In the short space of two years Manchester’s Now Wave have graduated from putting on up and coming bands at the Deaf Institute to bringing huge international acts such as Flying Lotus, Battles, Doom, The xx, Four Tet and Chris Cunningham to Manchester for some of the most thrilling and groundbreaking shows the city has seen in a long time. Their weekly club night adheres strictly to their motto “give the past a slip”, playing only the best new music from the last two years.
