Growing up in the acrid desert of Arizona in the US, WHP18 artist Avalon Emerson didn’t have much access to the kind of electronic music she now loves. Her interest in music began with the local punk and DIY scenes. She described her hometown as “the most beautiful, alien landscapes and massive skies and little, really gorgeous stampeding clouds”
It wasn’t until she moved to San Francisco in 2009 that she began to be gripped by a love of Djing and Production. She bought her first set of turntables whilst she was studying in college.
She moved in to a warehouse-style apartment with several other people and they started to throw event-style house parties. There would be a google form to fill in for your invite, special flyers and you would have to pay in on the door.
After feeling like San Francisco was becoming stagnant, Emerson made the move to Berlin where she resides now. She said that living there, “has been inspirational. I love being around all the different cultures, languages, and histories”
Prior to becoming a full time DJ, Avalon Emerson was a software engineer – a job that she left only a couple of years ago. She says that despite leaving this as her career, she still enjoys to code in her rare off time.
She released her first track on Soundcloud in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2014’s Icee Hot release that she had her music out in the world in a physical form. Since then, she has released on labels such as Whities, Shtum and Spectral Sound. She has also recently provided a mix for the conitunually revered Essential Mix on Radio 1
She joins Marcel Dettmann, Daphni and Blawan on 20th October for the Curated by Daniel Avery event.
