WHP18 ARTIST PROFILES /// SAN PROPER

03.09.18

San Proper (often he calls himself Dr.Proper, Professor Proper or even a combination of the two) is the enigmatic, extravagant and completely unofficial mascot of Amsterdam’s house scene. His wild sets and even wilder personality have cultivated an avid following, and he joins his friends and fellow Dutchmen on the Rush Hour Day & Night event on Saturday 13th October.

In his sets, San Proper uses a unique combination of synths, guitars and his own vocals – which he says he uses like a diary. This approach lead to his live shows never being the same as the one before, as he mixes up his sets as he goes.

His first introduction to music came at the age of 9, when he began to play guitar. He still owns a large collection of guitars, all of which reside in his basement studio in Amsterdam’s ‘Volkshotel’.

In 1995 he founded a band called ‘The Mindmenders’, which garnered some critical acclaim, including the prestigious ‘Grand Prize of The Netherlands’. After leaving the band, San Proper began DJing in clubs around Amsterdam and experimenting with analogue equipment to produce his own music. San Proper has been closely linked with Rush Hour throughout his career, even going as far as to have a huge tattoo of the logo on his arm.

He also hosts a show on Red Light Radio, another Amsterdam institution, called Dr.San Proper’s Soul show, on which he plays a deep soul cuts, proving that his ability as a selector and his musical knowledge should not be overlooked due to his exuberant personality
