The first of the two WHP2010 launch parties sees an eclectic line up of guests from around the world joined by some of the brightest hopes from the UK, giving a perfect example of the breadth and quality of the artists appearing at this year’s series of events.  Hugely established worldwide names in house and techno will be appearing next to the latest batch of young new producers currently pushing music forward in England.

Swedish techno pioneer and Drumcode boss Adam Beyer will be headlining on the night, joined by  UK heavyweight Steve Lawler, whose long residencies at The End, Ibiza’s Space and NYC’s Twilo helped him forge his reputation as one of the top house and techno DJs we have. Dutch techno star Joris Voorn will be performing a special live set, demonstrating why he has won over fans as diverse as Carl Craig, Dave Clarke and the late John Peel. New York duo Metro Area were hugely influential for the return of the sound of disco the modern house lexicon, their early 12”s on Environ perfect examples of their contemporary reworking of old sounds. Also flying in from New York are Wolf + Lamb, who for over a decade have been throwing legendary parties in the city as well as releasing records.

Two of the brightest and most exciting young stars of the UK music scene will both be kicking off their WHP2010 residencies at this event; Jamie Jones and Joy Orbison, as will longtime resident Krysko. 

• Adam Beyer

  • Stockholm’s Adam Beyer is widely regarded as the figurehead of the burgeoning Swedish techno scene, alongside his compatriots and close friends Cari Lekebusch, Joel Mull and Jesper Dahlback.  Beginning his musical career working in the city’s renowned Planet Rythm record store, he went on to form his own label, Drumcode, named after his own first release. Since then he has released tracks on numerous labels such as Mad Eye, Turbo and his own Truesoul and Code Red imprints, as well as compiling several highly regarded mixes for the likes of Fabric, Fuse and DJ magazine. His hard and percussive style has won him worldwide acclaim, as as his immaculate and innovative mixing and unquestionable track selection.
    
    
     
• Steve Lawler

  • Born in Birmingham, Steve Lawler began Djing at illegal raves during the heydays of acid house. Since then he has gone on to become one of the biggest DJs in the UK, holding successful residencies at London’s The End, New York’s Twilo and most famously Space in Ibiza, where such was the popularity of his epic sets he was given the enviable nickname “King of Space”. Although he plays across the house and techno spectrum, he is known for his deep, dark and intense sound, showcased perfectly on his Lights Out series of mixes.
    
    Since 2006 he has run the succesful VIVa label, releasing his own dynamic productions as well as tracks by the likes of Hermanez, Tiefschwarz and Darosh.

  • Born in Rotterdam, figurehead and leading light of the Dutch scene Joris Voorn began DJing in 1997. He started producing his own music three years later, and his first release on Keynote found its way into the boxes of such luminaries such as Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, DJ Rush and even the late John Peel. The track Incident from his Lost Memories Pt 2 EP was an instant classic, named as techno track of the year by Mixmag and topping numerous DJs’ end of year lists. His recent single on Cocoon, The Secret, has been absolutely unstoppable this year. He also runs the Green label with compatriot Edwin Oosterwal, releasing music by artists such as Stimming and Ripperton.
     
• Jamie Jones

  • One of the brightest young stars of the UK house and techno scene, Jamie Jones’ rise to the top has been as unstoppable as it has been well deserved. His 11 year DJ career has seen him hone his craft to become a regular at some of the best clubs in the world; Fabric, DC10, Space, and Berlin’s Watergate to name a few. His early releases on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels imprint immediately marked him out as a young producer to watch, as did successive tracks on labels such as Cocoon, Get Physical and Freak N Chic.  His debut album “Don’t You Remember The Future?” was one of the biggest dance successes of last year, winning him the Best Producer and Best Dance Single (for the huge Summertime) awards in DJ Mag. He describes himself as a stylistically varied DJ, with roots in “deep house, Detroit techno and generally anything moody, edgy and groove based.”
     
• Wolf + Lamb [ Gadi ]

  • New York duo Wolf + Lamb have been throwing parties for over a decade, and releasing records since 2005. Providing a spring board and artistic community for upcoming young acts such as Seth Troxler, Shaun Reeves and Soul Clap, their diverse label puts out anything from old disco edits, minimal techno to deep house.  Their mini empire has grown since then, and now includes three labels, a clothing line, a club and even a fake hotel that actually functions as their Brooklyn headquarters.  They have hosted over a hundred different Wolf + Lamb parties, including an annual one at the infamous American Burning Man festival.

  • The duo of Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani, based in Brooklyn, released four vinyl EP’s on Geist’s Environ label in the early 90s that instantly won them the recognition of the entire house scene. Their stylish and understated updating of old disco, funk and soul sounds were perfectly balanced in both tone and arrangement, managing to sound both retro and modern simultaneously. They were hugely influential on the crop of new disco producers and disco re-edits that followed them, and their mixes Unclassics and Fabric 43 were lessons in dance music history, containing many rare and forgotten gems. Their eponymous 2002 album received almost unanimously glowing reviews, and was named second best album of the decade by Resident Advisor and album of the year by BBC music amongst others.
     
• Joy Orbison

  • Few artists have become so talked about as quickly as 23 year old Peter O’Grady did in the aftermath of his debut release under his guise Joy Orbison, the unstoppable Hyph Mngo. Topping many ‘best single of 2009’ lists, the track and its b-side Wet Look both pulled off the near impossible trick of referencing house, UK garage, dubstep and even jungle whilst concurrently sounding completely fresh, original and unlike anything else around at the time. Since then the hybrid sound he helped pioneer has blossomed, with many new producers using the myriad influences of Hyph Mngo as a touchstone. O’Grady credits his uncle, drum and bass legend Ray Keith, with introducing him to jungle and UK garage at a young age. Recently named by both the NME and the Guardian as someone to watch  in  2010, he launched his own record label, Doldrums, this year.
     
• Krysko

  • Of Ukrainian descent, growing up in Yorkshire but now residing in Manchester, Krysko has been DJing for over 17 years and is rightly known as one of the best DJs in the whole city. A handpicked resident for Sankeys and Tribal Gathering for many years, the list of legendary names he has played with goes on and on; Derrick Carter, François K, Todd Terry, Underground Resistance and countless more. Over the last few years he has been a stalwart resident of the Warehouse Project, playing alongside the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, Hot Chip and others, as well as playing on the WHP essential mix on Radio 1.
