Sasha first got into DJing after attending nights at Manchester’s legendary Hacienda, a place which he says was like nothing he had ever seen before. He was so enamoured with the club and the culture that surrounded it that he was determined to make it as a DJ – he claims to have practiced for 12 hours a day sometimes, much to his neighbour’s dismay. His big break came when he moved in to the same building as a Hacienda resident. They allowed Sasha to open for them, and his meteoric rise began there.
The live show that Sasha brings to the Apollo, as well as his previous tours, happened almost by accident. After moving to LA, he was writing music with a more cinematic tone. After becoming disheartened with Hollywood and LA in general, he left with a considerable amount of new music behind him with no avenue to release it. He spoke to Late Night Tales who, although they didn’t release the music, knew exactly what Sasha was trying to achieve with it. They put him in contact with people who asked if he had ever considered playing it out live, which he hadn’t as he had always considered his music to be specifically for a club setting.
After agreeing to take his new music to large venues with a full orchestra, Sasha began to look over his back catalogue, and worked out that he would be able to mould and shape it in to something new – something that could be amazing backed by the orchestra. This new direction, he says, has been an amazing gift. 30 years after his career as a DJ began, he is able to take an entirely new approach whilst still fulfilling his love of playing music.
