WHP18 /// An Introduction To… DJ Nobu

13.10.18

DJ Nobu is one of Japan’s finest electronic music exports. His start in music came within the hardcore and punk scenes of his hometown, Chiba - Japan.

In 2001 he founded the now legendary Future Terror parties. They have gone on to become one of Japan’s most celebrated nights, featuring acts from all over the globe, such as The Black Madonna and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe. Future Terror have continued to sell out parties since their inception to today.

In 2010, Marcel Dettmann invited him to play at the Berghain, and he has been on an upward trajectory ever since without losing sight of his underground rooting. This international acclaim has seen him play around the world to larger audiences than he ever dreamed of.

It was the older kids at warehouse punk shows he used to attend that first introduced Nobu to DJ’ing, where they played dance tracks alongside the punk records that he liked. His first attempts were, by his own admission, not great, (he attempted to mix Japanese pop songs with classic hip-hop).

Now though, DJ Nobu is known for his raw, aggressive brand of Techno, which he mixes with an accuracy that he believes has stemmed from the martial arts knowledge that he gained during a break from DJ’ing. The ability to think ahead and plan your next move is key in martial arts, and Nobu has translated that in to his sets by planning several records in advance and even going as far as to have an idea of where he wants to be 30 minutes from where he currently is. It is not just within the confines of techno that he excels however, as he is known for following all variety of musical styles in relation to his surroundings.

In an interview with Resident Advisor, Nobu claims that he prefers shorter sets, saying that “I think the 3 hour mark is best for me”. Despite this he has been known to play for over 12 hours, and as little as 1 in his Boiler Room set.

See DJ Nobu alongside Hunee, Antal, Moodyman, Gerd Janson and more at the Rush Hour Day & Night event on 13th October.
